Treasure Island Education Centre

Treasure Island is one half of the island that bisects the Bay Bridge over the San Francisco Bay. The “treasure” half used to be a top level navy base with access only from two tiny roads coming off the bridge, the sea, or the air. But in the base closure flurry, Treasure Island’s military packed up and left – left behind what’s mostly a toxic ghost town. The sad part is that some people were left there, either unable or unwilling to move and the “newer” parts of the island’s development are basically slums in newer dwellings. I can’t imagine being trapped there by water and a freeway with precious little to do but watch the crabs watch you watching them.

The other side of Treasure Island, tho, is a place that I’ve been told I need to see so I’ll get a ride there someday and leave my van at home…
